Max is an 11 year-old boy, about to start secondary school. He likes to paint his nails and wear lipstick, but that’s only allowed in the house and never outside it. His parents Vicky and Stephen have separated for unclear reasons, and can’t comprehend the reasons behind Max’s »feminine« drives. But when he grows impatient, growing seriously depressed, his parents are forced to listen.
»Butterfly« is a heartfelt and sensitive drama about the complex relationship between separated parents, Vicky and Stephen, and their division in opinion over how to support their youngest child, Max. From a young age, Max has identified as a girl but has tried to suppress these feelings in an attempt to earn Stephen’s approval. When Max’s feelings become increasingly distressing, Stephen seizes the opportunity to return to live at the family home, hoping to encourage male bonding and prove himself to Vicky. What unfolds is the greatest challenge and test of love and understanding imaginable. The social transitioning of Max to Maxine is initially thwarted because of the clear division of opinion between Vicky and Stephen.
11-year-old Max identifies as a girl and wants to live her life as Maxine. Her estranged parents Vicky and Stephen attempt to work out how best to cope with and support this huge life decision. Max’s elder sister Lily encourages him to embrace his feminine identity, their mother Vicky fears the consequences and a furious Stephen is driven to a terrible revelation.
Maxine attempts to mutilate herself, convincing her parents that she must be allowed to live openly as a girl. However, her grandmother is appalled by the development, while the doctors at the gender clinic take the view that she is not yet ready to undergo medical intervention. Lily feels neglected by her family, leading her into a situation she is not ready for. In an attempt to understand and support Max, Vicky and Stephen attend a support group for gender nonconforming young people and the family attends their first appointment at the gender clinic. Vicky takes desperate measures, stealing money from the business to take Maxine to America, in the hope that help can be found there. But Stephen still struggles and ends up making a mistake.
Vicky forges Stephen’s signature to obtain consent for Maxine’s puberty blockers assessment at an US clinic, but he has already reported her to the police and she is arrested on her return to the UK. A social worker is appointed to determine what is best for the family, leaving both parents facing the prospect of losing their child. Vicky makes a confession to Paula as she tries to make peace – which Stephen uses against her. But as Maxine’s treatment lies in jeopardy, the family has to work together or Maxine will not be able to transition.
